DAT’s April Truckload Volume Index sees declines from March

April’s TVI dry van freight reading—at 273—was off 10% compared to March, with the refrigerated TVI—at 190—and the flatbed TVI—at 229—down 10% and 6%, respectively, for the same period. April retail sales are strong, reports Commerce and NRF

Commerce reported that April retail sales—at $677.7 billion—saw a 0.9% increase over March and an 8.2% annual gain. It also noted that total retail sales, from February 2022 through April 2022, increased 10.8% compared to the same period a year ago. Based on its Commerce’s data, retail sales have seen annual gains every month going back to March 2020. NRF said that in its calculation of retail sales, which excludes automobile dealers, gasoline stations, and restaurants, to focus on core retail, pointed to sales being up 0.9% in April on a seasonally adjusted basis from March, while rising 6.4% on an unadjusted basis annually. POLA and POLB post strong April volumes, setting records in the process

Total April POLA volumes—at 887,357 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units)—were off 6.29% compared to April 2021. Despite the decline, POLA said that this tally marked the second-highest April in the port’s history, with April 2021’s 946,966 TEU the highest April for the port. STB issues service ‘directive’ to U.S.-based Class I railroad carriers

XPO posts record Q1 2022 earnings results

Quarterly revenue—at $3.47 billion—increased 16% annually an 41% compared to the first quarter of 2020, representing the fifth straight quarter XPO’s revenue has set a new record. EBITDA—at $321 million—also set a new record, while posting a 15% annual gain (full-year 2022 EBITDA guidance issued by XPO now stands at $1.35 billion-to-$1.39 billion), and adjusted earnings per share—at $1.25—marked the highest for any first quarter in company history, topping Wall Street estimates, at $0.93. The Port of Los Angeles (POLA) and the Port of Long Beach (POLB) said late last week that they have again postponed the implementation date for their ocean carrier Container Dwell Fee, which will now not be considered until May 6.
