DAT’s September Truckload Volume Index trends down ahead of holiday season

September’s TVI dry van freight reading—at 228—was off 13.7% compared to what it called “an unusually active August,” while remaining in line with previous years. And it added that the TVI was 2.9% below September 2021 and up 1.8% compared to September 2020. September truck tonnage readings are mixed, reports ATA

The ATA’s advanced Seasonally Adjusted (SA) For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index, for September, came in at 118.8 (2015=100), for a 0.5% increase. IANA data points to declining September intermodal volumes

Total September volume—at 1,468,650 units—was off 2.0% annually. Trailers—at 66,393—saw the largest decline, falling 28.6% annually, ahead of August’s 25.6% decline. Preliminary September Class 8 truck orders hit highest levels ever

FTR reported that preliminary September North American Class 8 net orders—at 56,500—easily topped the August tally by 169% and was up 102% annually, with the firm reporting that over the last 12 months through September, Class 8 orders came in at 254,000 units.
